2019 Andrew J. Goodpaster Prize, featuring LTG H.R. McMaster

The Annual Andrew J. Goodpaster Prize and Lecture was inaugurated twelve years ago in memory of one of the U.S. military’s great ‘soldier-scholars.’ It honors and helps to perpetuate the work of fellow ‘soldier-scholars’ in the mold of General Goodpaster.

LTG H.R. McMaster (U.S. Army, Ret.) delivered the 2019 lecture on June 20. A graduate of the United States Military Academy, McMaster received his Ph.D. in American History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His Ph.D. thesis served as the basis for his landmark book, Dereliction of Duty. He is the recipient of the Silver Star for actions in the Battle of 73 Easting in the Gulf War, and won widespread respect for his counterinsurgency efforts in Operation Iraqi Freedom. He most recently served as National Security Advisor, retiring in May, 2018.

The Andrew J. Goodpaster Prize and Lecture is presented by the American Veterans Center, with support from the Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation.
